Long time, no blog.
It’s been a long time since I’ve blogged. I’m sure most of you know I’ve had some life-changing things to deal with this summer, so I figured I’d just use this forum to catch everybody up. Anyway, I’m in Springdale, Ark. now. Two months ago, I had never set foot in “The Natural State.” But, life happens. And negative things happen for a reason. On...

Life sucks.
And you thought I was going to go on a manic-depressive rant. Well, I could, but I’m not going to! Life sucks because the Associated Press says so.

My bucket list.
It’s been a while since I’ve been inspired to blog. I don’t really know why. Perhaps I’ve had my batteries recharged a little since I’m on vacation, and will be for the next few days. Anyway, I just turned 30 a couple of days ago. Truthfully, I don’t feel like I’m 30, I still feel like I’m in my 20s. I’m sure I’ll catch up with my age...

Why stalk somebody who has a fictional profession...
I watch a lot of television. The Office, of course, is my favorite show. I like 30 Rock. I just started watching House, and it is growing on me. My DVR, which I set up at the beginning of the season, had about 17 or 18 shows tagged to record new episodes. And a few of those shows are now canceled, which included the brilliant Journeyman, the so-so Bionic Woman and Cavemen, which I thought was a...

My ears are healing.
Those who know me know that I’m a huge fan of the music of Ben Folds. So huge, in fact, that I had seen him in concert six times. And Monday night at Murray State University (my alma mater), I saw him for the seventh time. Ben was late in arriving to the venue…apparently he had to undergo some kind of medical procedure earlier in the day that involved a small camera probing inside his...

It's all about the music.
I had never heard of Big Star until the other day. Check that. I had, but just as one of those old chain grocery stores…I think there’s an old paper bag from there underneath my house. But this Big Star was a band from the 70s, and one of their songs, “Thirteen,” was the backbone of the best scene of the season on network television which occurred Monday night on How I Met...

High Fidelity for dummies.
I consider myself fairly technologically advanced. I set up a DSL connection on my parents’ computer a couple of years ago when they thought they would have to have somebody from the phone company come and install it. I installed a high-definition cable box on my television with little or no hassle. I can text, e-mail and download music with the best of them. So, when my parents let me have...

Take a look at me now.
I’m saluting the University of Kentucky Wildcats with this lovely 1980s power ballad by Phil Collins. The Wildcats overcame a ton of odds to make this year’s NCAA Tournament. And this isn’t the cheesy 80s video of this song, it’s just him and a piano playing in front of thousands at Live Aid! I wished I had the video-editing skills to insert various highlights of the...

March mascot madness.
Two mascots get into it at a mid-major championship game. One of the masks comes off. A cheerleader tried to separate them. And after the video, ESPN “experts” Rece Davis, Digger Phelps and one Robert Montgomery Knight break down the film and tell old mascot stories. If only I was kidding. There are only two things I can really add to this: 1. I saw the school with the Jaguar mascot,...

Donnie Darko.
A couple of weeks ago when she was in town, my sister feigned surprise when she learned I hadn’t seen the movie Donnie Darko. We were discussing one of the songs used in the film, “Mad World” by Gary Jules, which I had downloaded a couple of years ago when I saw it being used in a commercial for a video game, of which the name escapes me right now. I had heard of the movie, only...

Why I'm not a meteorologist.
So about the other night, when I was talking about how there was much ado being made about nothing as far as the weather goes. Forget I said anything about that. I’m no Jim Cantore (pictured above), the meteorologist-extraordinaire for the Weather Channel. Apparently when snow comes from the sky in huge clumps like it did last night, and the temperature dips below freezing (about 25...

I make the weather!
According to television reports, this year’s WINTER STORM OF THE CENTURY is supposed to hit tonight, with up to 10 inches of snow in some places. Excuse me if I’m not panicking. I was watching the Weather Channel earlier, with the great meteorologist Stephanie Abrams, but right now I’m watching a show on National Geographic called Crash Science which is breaking down the...

Music, etc.
I got a compliment from one of my co-workers the other day. She works on the newsside at the paper, and her husband is a news clerk. She told me that her husband told her that I knew more about music than anybody he had ever met, with the exception of music journalists, who are paid to write about music for a living. I was kind of floored by the compliment, needless to say. I’m not really...

Hey, Cornell has always stayed above board.
Andy Bernard has every right to shout from the mountaintops about how great Cornell is. I’ve never heard anything about wrongdoing with its basketball team. However, Harvard seems to be a different story. Somehow Harvard has a surprising good recruiting class for next season, ranked perhaps as the best the Ivy League has ever seen and possibly one of the best in the country. Since Harvard...

A band of former child stars.
Upon reading that the guitarist of the band Rilo Kiley, some guy named Blake Sennett, is engaged to Winona Ryder, I also found out that Sennett and the lead singer of the band, Jenny Lewis, are former child actors. Lewis, in fact, was in one of my favorite movies back in the day, Troop Beverly Hills… Wait, I found out she was in Pleasantville too. I have to watch that again. I have one of...

A match made in heaven.
A quick thought (and question) before I head off to work, and feeling somewhat refreshed after getting a fairly decent night of sleep. ESPN announced yesterday that Bob Knight will become part of the media (which he so loves) during the college basketball conference championships and the postseason, joining the aforementioned Worldwide Leader as a studio analyst. Here is my question. What is the...

The Two Cathedrals.
So yeah, I haven’t been dedicated to posting on here the last couple of days. Part of that is because, for some reason, my body has forgotten how to sleep. The last few nights I haven’t started snoozing until 4 a.m. or later, and I get up the next morning about 11 and am usually crabby the rest of the day. I can’t function on fewer than eight hours of sleep. So I’m...

The extremely late show.
That’s what I missed tonight. I had a choice between watching the Academy Awards or my weekly ritual…NASCAR. I decided to watch the race and record the Oscars. Little did I know that I could have watched the Oscars and then come home and watch the end of the race, which is what I’m still waiting to do…at 12:58 a.m. Maybe Jennifer Garner decided to forego the post-Oscar...

In Excelsis Deo.
So last night I finally cracked open The West Wing: Season 1, which I bought on sale for about $13 at Circuit City the day after Thanksgiving. The first episode I watched was the Christmas episode, the one where Toby uses President Bartlet’s name to finance a honorary funeral for a homeless war veteran. Two things I noted from the episode… The walking and the talking: I know...

A clash of two titans.
If you live in Tennessee and you can’t find any bottles of Grecian Formula at your local convenience store, it’s because two of the greasiest college basketball coaches (literally and figuratively) in the country are needing to lather it on before Saturday night’s big game. The biggest game of the season takes place in Memphis, when top-ranked and undefeated Memphis meets...

Suspension of disbelief.
There is one man who has bedded Rhona Mitra, Saffron Burrows, Lake Bell, Gail O’Grady and Parker Posey. And I’m sure I’m leaving out others. And this man is…not George Clooney. But this guy.  Boston Legal is one of the most well-acted, well-written shows on television right now. It might not have the genius of THE WIRE, which I keep hearing is the best show ever created....

Is it me?
There is never a bad time to post a picture of Ashley Judd. I wanted to find a screen capture from the opening scenes of Double Jeopardy, but I had a feeling the good people here at Tumblr would not approve that. Since the turn of the calendar year, the University of Kentucky basketball team has been playing decently. Tonight, they clinched at least a .500 record with its eighth Southeastern...

Comments.
For the one-and-a-half of you that are reading this (and I’m being generous), I’m taking down the comment html code that I installed last night and putting in a new one. It seems when you comment on one entry, it decides to put the same comment on all the entries.

History Of The Joke.
I’m watching a show on the History Channel with the same title as the subject of this post. And I can say there is nothing that compares with watching Gallagher smash fresh produce with a sledgehammer in high-definition. This program is hosted by the always hilarious Lewis Black, and I have seen comedian/actors such as George Carlin and Robin Williams interviewed on the program. But I was...

Dancing With The Stars.
I make it a point to not watch reality television. But I know a lot of people watch Dancing With The Stars. People in my family, co-workers, etc., can’t get enough of this show. (And after seeing clips of professional dancer Julianne Hough, for some, I can see why they watch each week.) After seeing the spring lineup for the show, I likely won’t be watching it again. Led by Adam...

Hello.
This is me. I’m sure five people will see this…I don’t really have a hell of a lot to blog about, so I’m not sure how much I will post. But this place seems to have a lot of bells and whistles, so that’s cool.
